So, What Is Sublimation Printing and How Does it Work?
If you’re in search of custom swimwear for your team, you may be wondering what is sublimation printing?
Sublimation printing is a process of decoration in which images are transferred onto a surface by printing the image onto paper then transferring the image to the final surface by using a heat press. When it comes to swimwear sublimation, this means that we can design a swimsuit from seam to seam instead of screen printing or embroidering logos in specific places with limitations on size and number of colors used in the artwork. Sublimation opens the doors to designing dynamic, one-of-a-kind swimsuit designs to the entire garment. The sky is the limit!
But beware - not all sublimation printing is the same! We know because we’ve been sublimating suits for nearly 10 years and learned every pitfall there is in the process if it’s not done right.
How Does Sublimation Work?
First of all, you need high-quality inks to ensure the most vibrant hues and ability to match Pantone colors. These inks also play a vital role in the health and maintenance of the sublimation printers, which also need to be top-of-the-line to ensure designs retain their integrity in the sublimation printing process and don’t come out with striation or imperfections.
The sublimation paper used is also important to make sure that as much ink as possible is absorbed into the paper. Why does this matter? Because the more ink in the paper, the more ink will go into the fabric of your swimsuit, rendering the colors vibrant and allowing the ink to penetrate further into the fabric when heat pressed...which brings us to the final key component to the process - the heat press!
We use top-of-the-line heat presses which not only maintain the perfect temperature needed to heat press various fabrics (so they won’t overly shrink or distort the fabric) but also use a vacuum system to pull the ink deeper into the fabric. Better ink penetration means that when your swimsuit stretches over the body, you won’t see white fabric peeking through which would make your suit look faded.
So to summarize, here’s why we love sublimation printing on swimsuits and so should you:
- You get full freedom to design your swimsuit from seam to seam
- Your designs will never come off or fade
- Your team will have a one-of-a-kind look that will unify them and make them feel great while performing their best!
